It started out as a day trip while we were in Hong Kong. I’m not sure why we decided to go there. It was a spontaneous idea that just seemed cool at the time. We were going yeah it’s got casinos and you can take a boat ride over there. Being in Hong Kong was exciting so getting to see another place that you didn’t know would be too. We got our tickets to board the ferry boat that was more like riding a jet than a boat. When we took off, the boat seemed like it was going two hundred miles per hour on our way over to Macau. It took about an hour to get there. Once we arrived you could see large towering buildings that were shiny and looked brand new. They must have not been there a really long time. These buildings were the casinos that were everywhere and made the landscape look like Las Vegas. When we got off the boat there were hoards of Asian people walking to the casinos. So we decided to follow them and check out the scene. The casino we went in was as packed as could be. It was almost like you could not walk through it and took like thirty minutes just make your way through the complex. This was very exhausting but you could see the intensity of people’s expressions as they were gambling their money away with vocal excitement or disappointment. Gambling it seemed was just as big here as it was in Vegas, but you got a sense like this was more frantic. After we caught our breath, we said screw this noise. My partner and I decided to get some lunch and started making our way down the streets away from the casinos. We went into an area that appeared to have restuarants. As we walked up the street we saw a place that appeared to serve mediterrainian and asian food and decided to see what was on the menu. There seemed to be a lot of high-end restaurants in this area, but this one was kinda on the lower high-end side and had a nice feel to it. We were seated out on the patio and there were all kinds of lush plants outside that made you feel out of site and private. The sun was out and it felt good while you could hear all the sounds of the city. I ordered what appeared to be like a gyro sandwich and some green tea. We enjoyed sitting and relaxing before we were off to find the next attraction, which turned out to be the remains of an old church, Ruin’s of Saint Pauls, built way back in the day and looked very old. Only the front of the church was still standing and was the only thing that survived when the rest was destroyed in a fire. Next to the church was an old fort, The Fortaleza do Monte, which was built by the Portuguese for their colony at Macau. While checking out the fort and all it’s historical artifacts, a group of teenagers came over and asked where we were from. When we told them we were from America they seemed to be think it was cool we were there visiting there country. They wanted to know what we did and why we were there, which I was impressed by this since teenagers back home could not care less where I was from…lol. By the time we finished visiting with them, it was starting to get late in the afternoon. Since we had been walking all day we started to get tired and then decided we needed to get back to the ferry so we could catch our ride back to Hong Kong on time. We started back in the direction we thought we came from. All seemed to be going well, until I could not see anything that I could remember from earlier. I asked my partner, and she was not sure where we were either. All we knew is we were in a city in another country on the other side of the world that neither of us had been to before and had no idea where we were at. At first I was thinking ok this can’t be too hard, we just took a wrong turn some where. So we just back track to where we remember and then we would know how to get back. After trying this and walking a few blocks nothing seemed to be recognizable. All the buildings started looking all the same, and the real difficulty was this area had been around so long that the streets went every which way but north and south and east and west. We kept trying to find our bearings for what seemed like an hour. This was like trying to find your way out of one of those mazes that you see people running through where they are caught in a large area of bushes that they cannot see over and there is only one way out. So by this time it was starting to get dark and we did not know what direction we were going. The only thing that seemed good was that the weather outside was pleasant and it was not as hot as earlier. I was looking for someone to ask how to get back to the ferry, when all the sudden I could see lights from the casino buildings lighting up the evening sky. This was great as we were so relieved to have an idea of what direction to go now. As we made our way towards the casino district we often had to side-trek and go out of our way to get to where we were going because of the complex layout of the streets in Macua. But after zig-zagging our way through we finally made it back to the casinos and then to the ferry to catch our boat back. The time was about nine pm and we were exhausted when we got on the boat. We were able to find some good seats to relax in on the ride back while enjoying ice cold complimentary beverages. I unexpectantly decided to lay my head back to rest and then the next thing I knew my partner said we were back home and to wake up.
